Microwave drawers offer cooks tremendous flexibility and easy access to freshly heated food. In this edition of the Laura Report I’m going to go over the Sharp Microwave Drawers, how they work, the benefits of them and so much more.
Sharp has been in the microwave game for years and has sold more than 130 million microwaves globally since 1962. They offer a variety of home appliances but their drawer microwave really is the star!

The KB6524PS Microwave Drawer was the world’s first Microwave Drawer oven and helped revolutionize kitchen design and microwave oven placement. It’s designed to have an oven-style towel bar, which is unique compared to all other drawers available.

The SMD2470A series & SMD3070A series microwave drawers focus on the design element of the microwave and are available in 24” and 30” as well as stainless steel or black stainless and have hidden controls.

The new SMD2480CS Microwave Drawer is the newest product to the Sharp microwave drawer line. This drawer is hands free with a simple wave near the motion sensor and the drawer will glide open. With the touch of a button or a gentle nudge, the door closes smoothly to avoid making any spills. This drawer has been designed with discreet branding inside the hidden control panel to complement the widest range of kitchen styles and appliances. The touch glass control panel is easy to see and opens to a convenient angle, keeping all of the controls at our fingertips when you need them, and completely out of sight when you don’t. The modern, edge to edge black glass and stainless-steel design with bright LED interior lighting and stylish floor pattern compliments any kitchen. This unit is a 24” drawer but does come with a 30” trim kit if needed.

All Sharp microwaves have a low-profile design, easy touch automatic controls, and are tall enough for a 20oz tall coffee cup with a 1.2 cuft capacity and offer 950-1000 Watts of power, which is enough power to heat any food. You also might have noticed no turntable in these, that is because the entire cooking apparatus rotates internally. In a drawer microwave you’re lifting items up, not out, which helps prevent from potentially spilling of liquids. Kids and short adults can operate the microwave more safely, considering they won’t need a stool. On the flip side, you can also lock the control panel, to prevent your kids from using the microwave.

You do need to know that that microwave drawer models don’t have the option for convection cooking and the drawer is tougher to install because it is not a retrofit to existing cabinets.
Sharp has the patent on drawer microwaves and manufacturers most all drawers you see out there but that doesn’t necessarily mean they all look the same or cost the same.
Jenn-Air Drawer Microwaves
The Jenn-Air Microwave Drawer is on the cheaper end and is a nice match to the other Jenn-Air products. This unit comes with a 2- year warranty.

BSH Drawer Microwaves
The Bosch, Thermador & Gaggenau drawers all look very similar, then again, these three brands are all part of the BSH Company so there’s that to keep in mind. The Thermador drawer has a cleaner look with a mostly black door and the Gaggenau finish gives a more modern look. Both Thermador and Gaggenau carry two-year warranties on these and they can be mounted flush in a cabinet.

Wolf Drawer Microwaves
Wolf has three different models to select from in drawer microwaves. All of them match the new wall oven offerings and have a 2-year warranty.

Now when buying a drawer microwave there isn’t one drawer unit that will operate any better than the others, but there is a signification price difference. The few things you need to consider when shopping for a drawer microwave is the price, the drawer styles or look and the drawers ability to be mounted flush to the cabinet. Some of the manufactures listed have rebates that can make the cost of your drawer microwave more reasonable but each of those come with different rules so make sure you ask your sales representative how you can qualify for those.
