2017 is all about designing smarter. Cabinet manufacturers are adding practical elements to their designs without losing the timeless looks that continue to be popular. Here’s our top 5 design trends to look out for this year:
Interior Accessories
Interior Accessories make your cabinets more efficient. Their especially useful as homeowners opt for open kitchen designs without upper cabinets. Customizable pegs in your lower cabinets allow you to store your plates and bowls easily and securely.
We’re also seeing more cabinets tailored for your exact needs. Interior accessories allow you to better store cutting boards, spices, pans and coffee pod holders. Check out our Laura Report on cabinet organizers to see more!

To achieve a clean, open feel to the kitchen, cabinet manufacturers are hiding shelving in upper cabinets which move up or down with the press of a button. You can even hide a TV.
Interior accessories are not only for kitchen cabinets but are starting to become more and more popular in all your spaces. For example, a drying rack pulls out from laundry cabinets and allows you to dry your sweater without stretching it on a hanger.
We’re also seeing more pull down shelving being put in cabinetry. It allows for a perfect hanging rack that can be tucked away when not in use.

Lighting
Sleek, modern lighting is brightening 2017 and beyond. Just like shelves in refrigerators that have theater lighting, cabinet shelves are also getting lighter. LED lights are being added to cabinets and illuminating shelves.

Other Rooms
Don’t be afraid to unleash custom cabinets throughout your entire home this year. An entrance way with bench seating and cabinets hides the clutter in the front of your home and creates a convenient place to remove and put on shoes.
A daybed surrounded by cabinets in an office or living space makes a cozy sanctuary for an afternoon nap or to open a good book.

Revamp a powder room with custom cabinets. Bonus: choose a custom color to add personality to your space.
The point is to be creative and create an elegant space that’s practical for you and your family. These side projects add character to your home and can be done with a smaller budget.
Industrial & Rustic Design Trends
Rustic design trends are back for 2017. Distressed cabinetry is as popular as ever, especially in Texas. Designers are using reclaimed wood and adding the signature barn door “x” in their designs.
Shiplap is in and it looks great throughout your design. We’re starting to see shiplap added on drawers, cabinets and island caps. Shiplap are wooden boards layered horizontally that slightly overlap. It’s becoming more and more popular in interior spaces and you can cover a whole wall in it or just accessorize. Either way it looks great and goes with almost any look.

We’ll also continue to see the industrial style in 2017. As mentioned above, homeowners like clean, open kitchens which works well in an industrial look. Wood features, like shiplap or reclaimed wood combined with neutral tones and metal surfaces come together to create the “warehouse look.”
Metals
Brushed gold is back, especially with accessories. Cabinet hardware is going gold to compliment both industrial and rustic designs. We’re seeing gold light fixtures and sconces, floating shelves accented with brushed gold and gold metals being displayed on shelves and countertops.
Although gold metal is being used for accessories, other metals are being used throughout the design. Metal surfaces can be a focal point or a chicken coop effect can be used to dress up a cabinet.

While cabinet finishes are taking a more timeless look, the inside is trending toward smart and practical. Adding efficiency to our cabinets is a welcomed 2017 trend and this year will continue to bring innovation in our homes.
